Description
Growing up, I remember our family home was surrounded by greenery, thanks to my Dad. He had planted fruit trees and various kinds of flowers, as my mom loved flowers very much.
I want to share a story about my late mom. She came from a unique background. Her father came from Aceh, Indonesia, she attended convent school in Melaka, and she was a creative person. My mom was also a very soft hearted, compassionate person and very organized in her own way.
I have always wanted to create a painting that reminds me of my beloved mom. Why?
I don’t have any tangible mementos from my mom that’d remind me of her. When she passed, I was still in college and a little while later I moved to a different city because of my new job. As a result, I not only didn’t have a memento that I could remember her by, I didn’t have a lot of photos of her in my possession either.
My mom’s painting style was realistic still life. I remember I was in awe watching her paint and secretly wanted to be as good as her. Just like my mom, I hone my artistic skills in painting realistic subjects.
One incident I’ll never forget happened in 6th grade when I asked my mom to help me create and paint an art assignment. I remember watching her closely mix her colors on a plastic palette. She applied paints using an oil painting method on the watercolor paper and she painted it skillfully. I was amazed when I looked at the finished result and couldn’t believe how beautiful my painting (ahem, her painting) was.
Do you want to know what happened? The painting was selected by my homeroom teacher to be hung on the bulletin board for the week together with other selected paintings. The irony was my teacher never asked me who actually did the painting.
Other times, I remember my mom and I watched an oil painting flower tutorial on a TV show. She explained to me about the oil painting technique using a palette knife to create texture on the flower petals.
As a homemaker who had six daughters, she dedicated her life to raising us. She had very little time for herself to pursue her creative work, even as a hobby, which could have helped her with her health.
My mom passed away when I was in my first year in college. Even though I know that everything happens with the will of God, it was really tough for me to lose my mom.
But I didn’t let that weaken me. I knew she wanted me to be successful in my education and finding a good job after I graduated. I vowed to pursue art after getting my college diploma.
I felt like by becoming a full-time artist I have been able to pursue something she was never able to do. I’m blessed that I get to do what I love to do. My husband and children also support me wholeheartedly.
The first time I encountered this colorful rose, I was fascinated by the lighting that shone on it. It was such a joy to paint this rose. I spent equally a great amount of time painting the intricate veins of the leaves.
I dedicated this rose painting, Sunlit Rose, to my beloved mom who believed in my artistic talent.
This beautiful painting will be a memento for my children to remember their late grandmother, even though they never got to meet her here, but God willing, they will be in Paradise.
I offer prints of this Sunlit Rose, in paper and canvas, in multiple sizes. For canvas prints, you can choose either canvas wrap or a floating frame. I think you’ll love our framed canvas print as it comes in gold frame – it will instantly elevate the look of your home!
