Description
This yellow rose once bloomed in our front yard. We had just moved and we were delighted to have this rose bloom in the springtime.
My first painting of a yellow rose was when I painted a portrait of Princess Diana. I creatively combined a portrait of the princess with a yellow rose.
I have always wanted to paint a yellow rose. It’s been over 15 years since my first attempt at painting a rose with this color.
But I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to capture the essence of this beautiful rose in my painting. I was also concerned whether or not I could reproduce the rose’s vibrant yellow color.
As a former commissioned portrait artist, I’ve painted difficult portraits of people. Being a self-taught artist, I learned that confidence matters.
From drawing, to painting, to mixing colors, to creating the details you see on the subjects, a lot of decisions have to be made. With years of experience in painting people’s portraits, I applied those skills to this yellow rose painting.
I started with a line drawing, an outline of the flower excluding the details. I enlarged the image on my paper surface and began my painting.
I decided to paint the background black to make the yellow rose ‘pop’.
Yellow colored roses can be tricky to paint as you need to choose the correct shade of yellow. I wanted to create a gorgeous, see-through effect on the outer petals.
Without using too many earth tone colors, I managed to come up with just the right yellow colors for the rose. This rose has interesting shades of yellow (lemon, gold, and chartreuse). This combination of yellows makes this rose challenging, yet fun to paint.
The memory of this yellow rose holds a cherished place in my family’s hearts, bringing joy to us every single day. Though time has passed and the rose is no longer in our yard, its memory continues to bloom within us, a reminder of the beauty that once adorned our home.
I felt like I’d finally accomplished my mission by painting a yellow rose. Now that I have a full painting of one, I’m sure I’ll be painting more of them in the near future!
I offer prints of this Yellow Rose, in paper and canvas, in multiple sizes. For canvas prints, you can choose either canvas wrap or a floating frame. I think you’ll love our framed canvas print as it comes in a gold frame – it will instantly elevate the look of your home!
